Over the course of American industrial history, certain names stand out as pioneers who shaped the landscape of innovation and entrepreneurship. One of these pioneers is Jacob Vollrath, a man whose unyielding spirit and visionary mindset left a mark on the manufacturing world.

Born in Dörrebach, Germany, Jacob Vollrath began his career as an apprentice iron molder in 1837. In 1844, he and his wife immigrated to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream. 30 years and six children laterJacob began building what would become a manufacturing powerhouse—the Sheboygan Cast Steel Company. Little did he know that his venture would not only survive but thrive, evolving into the iconic Vollrath Company we know today.

In the beginning, the Sheboygan Cast Steel Company was a modest foundry located on 6th Street in Sheboygan, WI. Specializing in the production of railroad frogs, small cast parts for the furniture industry, cooking ranges, and agricultural implements, the company reflected the diverse industrial needs of its time.

The turning point came when Jacob's eldest son, Andrew Vollrath, ventured to Germany to master the art of porcelain enameling. This pivotal move marked the beginning of Vollrath's entry into the world of enameled cast iron cooking utensils—a move that would redefine the company's trajectory.

By 1876, with his newfound knowledge, Jacob Vollrath traveled from one community to the next, pushing a cart packed with his enameled cast iron wares. The gamble paid off, and by 1881, Vollrath's enterprise had grown significantly, with the employment of 40 men. The company was officially incorporated in 1884 under the name Jacob J. Vollrath Manufacturing Company.

The commitment to quality that Jacob instilled in his company was evident in its growth over the years. In 1912, the company relocated to its present location near N. 18th and Erie Avenue, a move that signified not only geographical expansion but also a commitment to growth and excellence. Jacob continued to oversee operations until he passed away, leaving an indelible mark on the company's dedication to quality and success.

However, Jacob Vollrath's legacy extends beyond the bricks and mortar of the manufacturing facilities. It lies in the innovative spirit that became synonymous with the Vollrath name. Jacob’s visionary approach to business laid the groundwork for what would become a globally recognized brand. His legacy lives on not only in the products that bear his name but also in the culture of innovation and dedication to quality that defines the Vollrath Company.

As we reflect on the journey of Jacob Vollrath, we find inspiration in the story of an immigrant who turned a small foundry into an industrial giant. His story is one of resilience, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit that shapes the American Dream. Jacob Vollrath's legacy is a living testament to the boundless possibilities that unfold when vision meets perseverance.
